Erin Dionne

is the author of Models Don’t Eat Chocolate Cookies (Dial Books 2009) and The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet (Dial Books 2010). Her books are for teens, tweens, and anyone who survived junior high. More About Erin…

Erin’s life is not a total tragedy: she lives outside of Boston with her husband, daughter, and a very insistent dog named Grafton. She roots for the Red Sox, teaches English at an art college, and sometimes eats chocolate cookies. Her Books…

Visiting schools and libraries to talk about writing is one of Erin’s favorite parts about being an author. Okay—that, and being able to work in her pajamas if she wants to! Erin is more than happy to visit your school or library and currently offers three presentations and a virtual visit.

Presentations
Making Chocolate Cookies
How Models Don’t Eat Chocolate Cookies went from being a short story to a full novel. Erin explains her writing process, shows the steps she went through during some of the book’s thirteen (!) revisions, and discusses how perseverance can make your dreams come true. This presentation is appropriate for a range of ages and both genders.
Shakespeare is NOT a Total Tragedy
We’ll have a brief talk about Shakespeare—his biography and what he wrote—and why I chose to have Hamlet’s family so obsessed with him. We’ll also act out a couple of scenes from The Total Tragedy of a Girl Named Hamlet and one from A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
Bullying, Body Image, and Mean Girls
This talk revolves around some of the themes in Models Don’t Eat Chocolate Cookies. Using Celeste (Models’ main character) as an example, we discuss her choices, decisions and the steps she took to feel better about herself. Ideal for all-girl audiences who have read the book.
Workshops & Virtual Visits
Creating Character: A Writing Workshop
This is a writing-based workshop that uses images to launch stories and create characters. All of Erin’s stories begin with character first, and we explore how knowing a character gives a writer freedom when developing a plot. We’ll do writing exercises together during this program. Good for ages 9 and up; writing-based.
Virtual Visits
I am more than happy to Skype in to your classroom and chat about writing and her books. As a matter of fact, she’ll do a 20-minute casual conversation for free! For a longer conversation or a specific presentation, please contact me for more information.
The Fine Print
Erin would prefer to do a maximum of three presentations per day, all of which run for one hour to allow time for questions.
Travel expenses, such as transportation and lodging, are the responsibility of the host unless otherwise agreed.
